The Witcher books
The first season of The Witcher has been on Netflix since December 2019. With the globally successful game Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the question arises again and again whether one should pick up all books, including the novel series, or not. Season 1 of The Witcher series initially focuses on the short stories. From season 2, it will possibly be about the novel series.
How many books are in the Witcher series?
There is a total of 9 Witcher books that were published at least in Germany from 2008 to 2015. The Witcher books are divided into short story volumes, and the Geralt Saga is also called Witcher Saga or Witcher Saga. Some even call the short story volumes the Geralt Saga’s first books, as they actually tell a bit of prehistory. No matter how you read the books, whether saga and then short stories first, it is worth diving into the books. The series will tell the books’ story and not come up with a plot, which is why I would prefer to read the books first.
As a quick answer to the Witcher books orders, it would be for me: First the short story volumes and then the Geralt Saga or the Witcher Saga.
In the books, the author Andrzej Sapkowski writes Geralt’s story, a witcher with extraordinary skills. Since childhood, he has been trained to kill monsters and has even been mutated in the process. The stories openly deal with intimate relationships, politics, drama, and death. Now and then, there is also humor, but if you like to immerse yourself in a gloomy world, in which there is not only black and white, you are in good hands here. Fans of fairy tales are also served with the Witcher books. The Geralt Saga follows the story between Ciri and Geralt. The short stories tell the prehistory and lose stories from the Witcher universe, immediately before the Geralt saga. But they keep adding short stories that strongly relate to the predestination between Geralt and Ciri and thus tie in well with the Witcher saga.

The Witcher short storybooks! Are the Witcher books good
As a reader of the books, I would actually recommend everyone to start with The Last Wish. It’s also very interesting for the series because the short stories here introduce every character we learn to love in other books, but also tell exciting monster stories. If you want to see Geralt kneeling deep in danger and in direct confrontation with monsters, then are the short stories anyway what you want to read! In “The Last Wish,” there are stories about Larkspur (Jaskier / Dandelion) and Yennefer, but that is also explained in detail here. But there is also space for Ciri’s first hints here.
Then one should dive into “the sword of providence.” This is where you meet Ciri for the first time, and the story takes place just before the Geralt saga. Nevertheless, there are many years gap between the two short story volumes. The Witcher books are linked to one another chronologically. The prehistory volumes of the Witcher saga are about the same size as the books from the saga, but the saga’s narrative style becomes a little slower. Monsters take a back seat, and it becomes much more political. The war between elves, humans, and Nilfgaard comes to the fore. Between “the sword of providence” and “the last wish,” there is still “time of the storm.” Since the book was only published last, it is also worth starting the book later. Here it gets more political and slower in the narrative style. Some things are written roughly here, as one should already know a little about Geralt’s stories.
The last wish
Geralt of Rivia makes his living fighting monsters of all kinds. As a sorcerer, he cannot complain about not getting any commissions because people need urgent help against vampires, dragons, and other demonic beings. When Geralt frees an air spirit, the latter beat him and his love to the sorceress Yennefer. Shortly afterward, his best friend is seriously injured and urgently needs his help.
Geralt von Rivia, still a sorcerer by trade, eliminates monsters of all kinds. But as a rule, his clients approach him with suspicion, as they are both afraid of the creatures and the sorcerer. His code forbids him from joining dragon hunters, but when he learns that his long-lost lover, Yennefer, is among them, he breaks his rules to be with her. But there is a rough mood among the hunters, and so there is soon a fight among them.
The Witcher saga
Anyone who has read through the short stories can continue with the Witcher books’ order after release, as these tell the main story piece by piece with a conclusion. With the short story volumes, one has well understood the providence and predestination between Geralt and Ciri and can fully engage with the topic. In contrast to the short stories, there are frequent character changes in the saga and no direct narration. Many characters are more often told in retrospect. Every now and then, the story is retold by delphiniums. It gets even more extreme with “the lady from the lake,” where the narrative thread takes place a few years from the future.
The Witcher books are also full of references to fairy tales, literature, and historical events.
The chronological order of the Witcher saga:
The Legacy of the Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski in book order
The Legacy of the Elves (First novel in the Witcher saga)
After the attack on Cintra, Princess Ciri is said to have disappeared. Rumor has it that she was kidnapped and held by the witcher Geralt. He actually took her in, saved her from another kidnapper, and is now protecting her. She is trained on the crumbling witcher fortress Kaer Morhen and is supposed to develop her magical potential at the same time. But what exactly is Ciri, and who is following her and Geralt?
The time of contempt (second novel of the Witcher saga)
The war is almost at the door. The kings and queens no longer trust the wizards. These have to clarify in a convention how they should behave in the upcoming war. But on the eve of this convention, Geralt is faced with a web of intrigues and alliances. Rience, still after Ciri, manages to provoke a bloody riot to get Ciri. But she manages to escape and suddenly finds herself all alone somewhere in nowhere.
Andrzej Sapkowski’s baptism of fire in the book order
Baptism of Fire (third novel in the Witcher saga)
Nilfgaard proclaims the emperor’s engagement to Cirilla, heir to the throne of Cintra. But is it the right person? Geralt, badly healed from his injuries, sets off to Nilfgaard to free the supposed Cirilla from the clutches of the Nilfgaardians. Accompanied by the bard delphinium and the archery Milva, as well as Riga, he experiences an adventure that the group did not expect. At the same time, a newly founded wizard’s lodge is looking for Ciri. And Ciri? She travels with her new friends, plundering through the country.
The Swallow Tower by Andrzej Sapkowski in the book order
The Swallow Tower (fourth novel of the Witcher saga)
Geralt and his companions are still looking for Ciri. The Ryan Queen would like to hire the troops as partisan fighters against the war against Nilfgaard. But they set off to continue their journey to the druids. During their journey, the group is ambushed, and Geralt is robbed of his witcher’s medallion. Meanwhile, Ciri is taken in by the hermit Vysogota until she directs all her swallow tower efforts. For this must be the place that is mentioned in their prophecy. But the tower is only a ruin.
The Lady of the Lake by Andrzej Sapkowski in the book order
The Lady of the Lake (Fifth novel in the Witcher saga)
Ciri is in another world. There she meets the knight Galahad, the knight of the round table. He thinks she is the lady from the lake, and she tells him her story:
It is the climax between the companions and Vilgefortz and Bonhart. At the same time, the danger of Nilfgaard and Emperor Emhyr becoming a new threat. He, too, follows the ancient prophecy, which Vilgefortz and Ciri helped determine.
Time of storm
The witcher Geralt von Rivia travels to the kingdom of Kerack, which is shaken by the struggle for the throne. He is looking for work in this country and is arrested as soon as he arrives. The sorceress Coral wants to force him to accept an assignment for the magicians in this country. With the support of the bard delphinium, Geralt is released and accepts the task of the magician. He does the job and suddenly faces a completely different danger, in which a magician shows an obscure interest in his extraordinary eyes.
Another story – Geralt and Yennefer’s wedding
That was not all. There is another book, “Something ends, something begins.” Eight independent narratives are linked to one another. In addition to large introductions to what the stories are about, Andrzej Sapkowski also writes little anecdotes about how he came up with these stories. Some stories are set before Geralt was born; another tells the wedding of Geralt and Yennefer. You hear stories from other people, other topics, and other stories in the Witcher world that I don’t want to anticipate completely. So, if you haven’t had enough of the author, you can still read this book!
Something ends; something begins stories.
Past and present are linked in these stories. Various myths are retold. But the end of the entire Geralt saga is also a topic here and could turn the ending completely upside down.
Order: The Witcher Comics from Dark Horse Comics
The order of the Witcher books actually ends long ago with the comics. There are four Witcher volumes. Glass house, fox children, crows’ curse, and flesh and flames. Chronologically, these comics are more related to the Witcher 3 series. Volume 4, in particular, was created entirely by CD Project Red. Fuchskinder, however, is an alternative story to the story of the aguara from the time of the storm. The Curse of the Crows takes place after the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt ends. The order of the comics is therefore not really relevant but tells exciting stories apart from the books.
When does the Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt play?
The game was developed by fans of the Witcher saga and book series by Andrzej Sapkowski. The end of the Witcher saga is final. But the developers rethought the ending and added their own interpretation. Thus, Witcher 1 and Witcher 2 Assassins of King’s contents are relevant, but Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt actually only plays after “The Lady of the Lake.” Here the story is enlarged, and a new ending to CD Project Red is added. The Witcher 3 games are, therefore, not for every reader.
The Witcher books: reading order and where to start
In December 2019, the long-awaited “The Witcher” series started on Netflix. Anyone who wants to get into the world of novels after the end of the first season will find out the correct reading order from us.
After many years of development, the elaborate real series “The Witcher” is finally running on Netflix. To the witcher community’s delight, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich did not use the three “The Witcher” games as a basis for her scripts, but rather the far more profound novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The series mixes stories from the first two short story volumes with the first part of the actual, five-part Geralt saga.
Born in 1948, Sapkowski was actually a sales representative before taking part in a short story competition in 1985, drawing inspiration from an old Polish legend about a dragon slayer. The author had always been bothered by the fact that the hero of the legend was a simple cobbler because, in his opinion, it made the story “implausible.” He found it much more realistic that specialists in a monster-infested world professionally hunt such creatures and get paid for them. With this, Sapkowski had created the basis for his witcher saga, with which he should become world-famous.
A total of nine “The Witcher” novels were published between 1992 and 2013, including three short story volumes. We recommend that you read the books in the order in which they were published. Otherwise, you run the risk of spoiling yourself massively. In addition to paperback editions, many books in the series are also available as e-books and even audiobooks. 9. Time of the Storm (novel, 2013)
