A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas Summary
Cassian has to double-check every Illyrian he meets. Feyre has inherited a curse-breaking skill from Helion, the Day Court’s High Lord. Jurian believes he would have fought for the human-Fae alliance in the first conflict. He only found a melted ring, which he smashed before Tamlin could see it. Feyre, Jurian, Lucien, and the twins are forced to live in a hole in the wall after escaping from Miryam’s estate.
Jurian says Feyre ruined the manor and killed the sentries on watch; he wants her to come out of hiding. Ianthe’s contemptuous attitude is well known among the other guards, who suspect Ianthe of planning an attack. Feyre’s actions provide her an advantage. How does she convince Vallahan, Montesere, and Rask to reveal that Hybern has a 200,000-man army supporting him? Feyre uses magic to control Ianthe’s thoughts.
Dagdan is distracted by Feyre’s fire powers on his sister. Lucien knows she will return to the Night Court when she is ready. He says he’ll accompany her because she won’t be able to make it solo. Feyre senses her abilities returning and unleashes the cave on his brothers. Kallias uses her power to solidify melting ice to hold back Eris and Cassian’s attackers.
Cassian is a spoiled brat around Feyre. Amren begs Rhys to kill Beron and his sons so Lucien can become the High Lord of the Autumn Court. Amren tells Feyre she sounds like Tamlin, so she seeks their support. Feyre asks Amren to make sure her explosion is felt globally. Feyre and Rhys agree to present themselves in public as High Lord and High Lady.
Nesta refuses Feyre’s invitation to the High Lord’s meeting. Azriel shows Feyre how to improve her Illyrian wings; Cassian accuses her of duping him into Hybern. Rhys and Feyre visit the Night Court library, where they meet Clotho, a priestess who is mute or mute-averse. Feyre claims humans lack magic, but Rhys says some do, possibly due to distant Fae ancestors. Both agree to look for more information on the wall.
In Chapter 22, Rhys, Feyre, and Cassian visit the prison. They discover that the wall was never meant to last. Hybern may have the numbers, but they may face monsters. The Book of Breathing may contain a spell to return him home. Feyre, Lucien, Ness, Amren, Nesta, Rhys, Feyre, More, and Azriel travel to the Nightmare Court.
Elain is overwhelmed by her new fae senses. Ness says she made the Cauldron give her something to repay her. Feyre tells Keir she seeks an Ouroboros mirror, and they could mate if she agrees. Feyre wonders how Eris and his brothers found and killed Lucien’s lover. Amren claims she had to disguise herself as a Fae to escape from the Bone Carver.
Féyre asks Nesta about her and Amren’s encounter in Hewn City. She allegedly took her to a treasure-filled room and made Nesta search for weaknesses. Lucien suggests Elain see a healer, and she agrees. The High Lords have agreed to meet; they just need to pick a location. Nephelle navigated a maze of jagged pebbles on the ocean floor.
Nephelle found Miryam blubbering on the ground and kidnapped her. Two High Fae in gray jackets captures Nesta from Hybern’s men. Faebane dust stops Feyre’s magic. In chapter 32, Rhys is bloodied. Feyre has a fresh tattoo to confirm her beast bargain.
Amren spent the night in Velaris looking for Hybern assassins and spies. Lucien sets out to find Vassa, a young woman in her twenties. Feyre’s powers are revealed to Tarquin and the High Lords. Feyre decides to give Rhys his head in a war tent, hearing the cries of dying or injured warriors outside. She will not be a coward, as Nesta claims, and report the incident to the Lords.
Tamlin accuses Rhys of bargaining with Hybern. Feyre says he returned to find a way out of the deal. Tarquin renounces his blood rubies and deems them debt-free. Azriel pierces Mor’s shield and tackles and strangles him. Feyre’s fury fades as fire shoots directly at Beron’s skull.
Nesta stops Beron, asking why he won’t help battle Hybern. Tarquin, Kallias, Helion, Thesan, and Tamlin all promise to fight alongside Viviane and Cresseida.
Nesta picks up Féyre and tells her something is wrong. Nesta says the Cauldron, not her, is broken. Cassian gives Nesta a dagger and advice on how to defend herself if attacked. Feyre asks Amren about the monster under the library. She tells Amren she wants to renegotiate the deal and asks her to check the wards.
Lord Graysen arrives with his father, Lord Nolan, and his guards. Nesta slaps him and tells him he didn’t deserve Elain. Brannagh and Dagdan are killed, and Jurian cheers. Feyre begs Elain to find Suriel for her; Elain says Suriel is in the Middle, near the Weaver’s cottage. In Chapter 59, Ianthe tries to catch Suriel using the same methods as Feyre, but Suriel refuses to comply.
She gives it a garment with a tracking spell on it that activated if Feyre visited it. Suriel urges her to leave the world better than she found it. Feyre wonders why Mor has never pursued Az or why she had to put Helion to bed. Feyre sees the King studying a military map, and Amren brings bones and stones for Nesta to scry. She and Nesta feel they’ve established a conduit for the Cauldron to see them, and The Cauldron knows where they are and can hear them.
Jurian reveals Tamlin’s position to Hybern, and Hybern decides to invade the Summer Court the next day. Azriel, Feyre, and Nesta’s journey end with their return to the Illyrian camp where Kallias’ army has come to join them. Briar is the rescued girl. Azriel is well again, although he can’t fly for a while. Then Mor tells Feyre that she was right about Azriel.
She professes to love him as a family member, but not as he loves her. Hybern has invaded human lands, slaughtering everyone in their way. Feyre knows she must find the Bone Carver, so she goes to the Court of Nightmares to face the mirror. The only thing she sees is herself until she notices a gigantic beast approaching from behind. When she looks in the mirror again, she sees herself, a reflection of what is under her skin.
In Chapter 70, Hybern awakens the Cauldron and uses it to burn Illyrian warriors in the skies. Drakon appears and says they heard war rumors that Rhys may have requested their aid. Nesta calls Cassian, expecting him to save his life. The King approaches the Weaver and snaps her neck, tossing her to two nagas. Cassian fights the King but loses.
Nesta covers Cassian’s body as the King returns. Amren enters the Cauldron and tells Feyre what she needs. Feyre warns her that if she does it, she will be gone forever and forget them. The Cauldron shatters into three halves, revealing Amren with gigantic flaming wings and a crown atop her fire hair. The High Lords refuse to restore Amren to Feyre since she is human.
Féyre detects the Cauldron’s crack is growing and will soon engulf everything. Rhys warns her about another surprise and tells her to remove Amren from the Cauldren. Nesta and Feyre pay their respects, pray, and then set fire to their father’s body. Feyre’s father negotiated a deal with Vassa’s keeper to let her stay briefly, but she is cursed but only human at night. The queens are still out there, says Feyre, but not for long, says Lucien.
Rhys, Drakon, and Miryam are waiting for Feyre in her tent. They agree to conceal the Cauldron in Cretea when Feyre requests. Nesta is back to her old ways of keeping silent and not communicating.
